My female role model in tech

In May 2024, I attended the ITU World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva. This summit was an opportunity for me to meet women Ministers of Digital Affairs in their respective countries: Burkina Faso, Togo… The exchanges I had with these women inspired me and gave me hope about the role we can play at state level in the digital transformation of our societies. They have reinforced my personal motivation for greater inclusion of women.

I also regularly meet rural and illiterate women during my travels in the regions who use digital technology without any training to develop their business. They are totally self-taught and manage to do wonders and increase their income thanks to their willpower.

It’s these women who inspire and motivate me on a daily basis.

Our future

Over the next decade, I envision a significant transformation in the role of women in the tech industry. As societal attitudes shift and organizations increasingly recognize the importance of diversity, I believe we will see a surge in female representation at all levels, particularly in leadership roles. This evolution will not only be a matter of numbers but also one of influence; women will drive change in corporate culture, policies, and technological innovation.

Key trends that I foresee women leading include advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). As these technologies become more integrated into various aspects of our lives, the need for ethical frameworks and diverse perspectives in their development will be paramount. Women, who often bring unique insights and experiences, will play a crucial role in shaping these frameworks, ensuring that AI is developed responsibly and inclusively.

Furthermore, the increasing emphasis on sustainability in technology offers a unique opportunity for women to lead initiatives that promote environmentally friendly practices. With climate change being one of the most pressing challenges of our time, women in tech can spearhead projects that utilize technology for social good, thus contributing to a more sustainable future.

As we look ahead, fostering an environment where women can thrive in tech requires collective effort. Organizations must commit to providing mentorship and sponsorship opportunities, ensuring that women not only enter the industry but also ascend to influential positions where they can make a substantial impact.

What advice we should give to young women entering the tech industry

To young women entering the tech industry, my foremost piece of advice is to cultivate a strong sense of self-belief and resilience. The tech landscape can be

challenging, often marked by rapid changes and competitive environments. It’s essential to remember that your unique perspective is invaluable. Seek out mentors and role models who can guide you through the complexities of the industry; their experiences can provide you with insights that textbooks cannot offer.

Networking is another critical component of building a successful career in tech. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and engage in online communities to connect with like-minded individuals. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network not only opens doors but also reinforces the idea that you belong in this field. Don’t hesitate to share your ideas and advocate for yourself; your voice matters, and contributing to discussions will help establish your presence.

To foster greater diversity and inclusion within the tech industry, organizations must take proactive steps. Implementing mentorship programs specifically designed for women and underrepresented groups can create pathways for success and help build confidence. Additionally, companies should regularly assess their recruitment and retention practices to ensure they are inclusive and equitable.

Training programs focused on skill development for diverse talent are also crucial. Investing in such initiatives demonstrates a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Finally, it’s essential for leadership to actively promote a culture of inclusion, encouraging open dialogue about diversity and making it a core part of the organizational mission. Only through these concerted efforts can we create a tech industry that truly reflects the diversity of the world we live in.
